Chinese New Year of Horse 2014

January 31, 2014 By Eleanor Hoh 3 Comments

Kung Hei Fat Choy everyone! Today is Chinese New Year of the Horse and celebrations continue for 2 weeks!
This is a good time to start a clean slate, remember no sweeping today or you’ll sweep away good luck, great excuse for no housework. Wear something red or gold to signify prosperity and good luck. Eat dumplings/wontons or gyozas which resemble gold ingots.
20140131-162534.jpgIt is my year, yay, though some predictions are not that good. I’m not superstitious and many positive things have happened already. If you’re a Horse, here’s everything you want to know!
I’ll be celebrating 3 dinners at home with friends, here are some easy dishes to cook up.
I’ll post up after the dinners and hope I remember to take food photos this year. It’s so easy to stir fry a few dishes to eat at home, important thing is to share with family and friends, enjoy!

Casa Vinicola Zonin host Wok Cooking Class

August 13, 2013 By Eleanor Hoh 4 Comments

I’m thrilled Casa Vinicola Zonin USA will host my Wok Star cooking class at their spectacular Miami penthouse loft for a series of three exclusive Art of Wok Cooking Classes that will pair fine Italian wines with Asian cuisine.

Thanks Eater Miami and South Florida Wine and Food for mention!

zoninloftpanoramic550
On August 21, October 23, and December 18 from 6:30-9:30pm, I will demonstrate my signature no-recipe approach, combining fresh ingredients and only 4 seasonings to create mouthwatering dishes that are simple and healthy. Each class will be a very intimate affair with only 12 guests at $65 per person who will experience this magical event.

The focus of this collaboration is to demonstrate how well Italian wines transcend into any cuisine. So, pairing wines with my Asian cuisine was a perfect challenge to showcase three different wine growing regions in Italy. My scrumptious Rainbow Lettuce Wrap appetizer paired with Zonin Prosecco and Fiji Water will wow guests as they arrive.  Next served will be a delicate Shrimp with Baby Bok Choy and Maritake Mushroom which will pair nicely with Masseria Altemura Fiano or Rocca di Montemassi Calasole. My last dish, Tilapia in a Spicy Brown Bean  Sauce will be a perfect complement to Castello d’Albola Chianti Classico.

I provide fun and creative cooking tutorials, which give established cooks and novices alike everything they need to cook like a Wok Star. Students will experiment with new flavors and Asian cutting techniques, learn how to mix and match vegetables and proteins for quick one-dish dinners, and receive a handy step-by-step visual roadmap I designed.  Guests will also take home a mini Zonin Prosecco as a gift from Casa Vinicola Zonin as well as Giveaways from premium sponsors.

HOH WOK CLUB, Shokudo

July 25, 2013 By Eleanor Hoh 12 Comments

I’m delighted to announce the first HOH WOK CLUB gathering of 2013 will be held at Shokudo, a beautiful Japanese restaurant in the up and coming Buena Vista area. So, I look forward to seeing you, bring your family and friends and join me for a 6 course tasting lunch, Sunday, August 25 from 12-3pm at an incredible price of $35 including tax and tips.

Thanks New Times for a fantastic writeup about this event and Brenda Benoit for her amazing recap.

Shokudo Resto 1 Shokudobar Shokudogarden200 Shokudo Resto 2

Everything in this restaurant is created with such thoughtful elegance from the reclaimed wood counters and saki bar, to the zen bamboo garden.  It’s totally charming!  I’ve always said it’s not just about the food, the ambience, space, and decor are just as important and I think we’ve found it at Shokudo. There’s a nice mix of foods from all over Asia, so you’ll get a mini taster.

Yoko Takarada is the owner and general manager of Shokudo and formerly owned World Resource Cafe on Lincoln Road and Toni’s Sushi Bar, both in South Beach. I love that she’s continuing her family’s legacy with Shokudo. This is the reason why I like to support smaller, independent family owned restaurants and want them to succeed.

From food critic, Victoria Pesce Elliott, Miami Herald: Executive chef Armando Litiatco cooked at Boulevard in his native San Francisco and at Daniel Boulud’s Restaurant Daniel in New York before being lured here by the Takarada clan. The culinary team is on view in the vibrant kitchen.
Chef Armando is Philippino/Chinese and so jovial and easy to work with!  He and I have put together a menu I know you’ll enjoy.  I took some photos during my tasting to give you a flavor of what to expect…
