July Events (Updated)

July 11, 2012 By Eleanor Hoh Leave a Comment

Keep visiting for more updates for July!

Shelley Belly’s Underground Supper Club!

Wow, wow, wow!  This ‘underground supper club’ my husband and I went to is exactly how we like to ‘experience’ a dinner.  Small and intimate so you get to know your fellow diners in beautiful surroundings and get pampered in the highest order. Sneak peek to highlights of this extraordinary and delicious dinner.  Anytime it includes my favorite piggy dish is a plus – a slab of pork belly which rhymes with Shelley Belly, the name of your host!

Here’s her blog for more on her Underground Supper Club.  Next will be Saturday, July 21st.  shelleybellyunderground@yahoo.com for full details and let her know Wok Star sent you!  Don’t delay, it’s a first come, first served basis and you need a password to get access when you arrive which I nearly forgot, what fun!

The District Factory

2nd Saturdays Gallery Walk – Miami Design Distri
Designers and Artists
POP SHOP
7-10pm
3900 NE 1st ave, Miami, FL

Join the Mash-up at The District Factory, an evening of shopping with 30 emerging designers and artists, film feature, live DJ, beauty bar and specialty cocktails.  Pop up vietnamese restaurant, Phuc Yea! (see miami.com’s article by Lesley Abravanal) will be serving up some of their tasty treats just for this night, so don’t miss it.  Sad I’m missing this but some very dear friends are celebrating their 35th anniversary, wow!

Don’t forget to visit Wynwood Art Walk, always fun to pop in and out of all the galleries and bump into your friends as well as meet new ones!  Not sure if the Food Trucks are still there but there’s always eats somewhere.

20th Annual Mango Festival

Tropical Fairchild Gardens
Sat. July 14 & Sun. July 15
9:30am-4:30pm

A festival to celebrate, collect, curate, teach and learn about the mango. View the world’s largest display of mangos, attend lectures, see cooking demonstrations centered around yup, you know what. I see our friend, Chef Jeremiah of that shiny airstream food truck, the Gastropod is making green mango prawn salad, umm, sorry I’m missing this! I was invited to give a cooking demo but I’m just not able to feed 75 from my little wok.
There’s  mango bites sampling, tasting & flavor evaluations, buy over 100 varieties of mangos, kid stuff to do. Enjoy mango heaven. One of my favorites are the small ones from Asia, they’re so sweet and juicy.  Get full details here.

I’ve had the honor and pleasure to meet Soul of Miami founders James Echols and Annette Peikert who do a fantastic job with their website.  They’ve helped promote my Wok Star class and I wouldn’t miss celebrating with them even if 800 and probably more will be turning up!
Soul Of Miami was created four years ago on July 16 (click here to see the very first post) entirely by accident. Since then, it has gone on to be one of the most popular local sites. We really enjoy being able to support the community by promoting art shows, fundraisers, business networkers, galas, happy hours and so much more. We hope that you will join us a for a little celebration of the SOUL of MIAMI.

Local Author Night

The Bookstore in the Grove
Thursday, July 19
7-9pm
3399 Virginia Street
Coconut Grove, FL 33133

I love supporting authors who brave self-publishing and have the discipline to do it!  This new and exciting literary event promotes talented local authors and gives them a platform to share their work and interact with the community.
This event will be emceed by my new friend & Wok Star, Pamela Lear who I met at an Underground Dinner mentioned above!  A showcase of 6 local self-published authors who’ll share their stories with a moderated Q & A session.   It’s an intimate space offering drinks and bites.
If you’re an author and interested to present your book at future events, get details here.

Wasabi Fashion Kult interviews Wok Star!
I’m so honored to be interviewed by Pamela Wasabi who calls herself a Fashion Aficionado/puzzle solver.  She is the creator of Wasabi Fashion Kult, a magazine documenting how the underground culture is expressing itself through fashion, music and art.  She’s done so much in her young life, wonder if she sleeps!  Go check out my interview here!

Remembering Dad on Father’s Day!
Here’s a tribute to my Dad, a non-traditional China man, dapper dresser, entrepreneur, foodie and fab provider. Oh, he was pretty eccentric too.
I wish I had a photo of my Dad cooking, he wore an apron and really got into it! He drove my mom nuts because he’d use only stems of veggies & the most expensive ingredients.  He’d like my simple but tasty Salmon Bok Choy Soup.

Miami Iron Side was masterminded by founder, Ofer Mizrahi who had a vision of a sustainable village concept.  It’s been a seven year project that’s grown to 60 tenants and continues to expand daily.  I’m thrilled Ofer is hosting my Wok Star cooking class at Coverings, etc.
Hope to see you there!
