HOH WOK CLUB: Bazi hosts Eleanor Hoh's Chinese New Year gathering

January 26, 2016 By Eleanor Hoh 2 Comments

To celebrate the Year of the Monkey, I’m excited to announce my HOH WOK CLUB gathers for a Chinese New Year Asian dinner with an Italian spin at Bazi, located inside the historic Marlin Hotel, Sunday, February 21st from 4-6pm for $50 including tips and tax, what a steal!  Only 50 69 lucky guests get to join me inside the dramatic dining room with red and gold accents, replete with elegant tufted banquettes, sleek pendant lighting, artfully shaped bonsai, and a massive dragon with glittering golden scales.
Bazi Interior
Bazi will offer guests a festive communal dining experience rich with traditional Asian touches. Diners can get their year off to a lucky start by enjoying menu items such as long noodles served to symbolize longevity, house made dumplings for prosperity and more, see menu and how to make your reservations below! Do not delay because once the 50 69 spaces are gone, that’s it, see you there! We got the upstairs intimate lounge as well, yay.
I went to their own Chinese New Year gathering with lion dance last week and sat at the bar, it was so much fun! I got to meet the neatest people and hang.  Here are many of the dishes you’ll be having. See all the cozy couches and lounge areas you can sit at if you prefer not to be at a table.

Here’s Chef Michael Pirolo waving right before the craziness started. Bottom right is braised mustard greens with crispy shallots, a very refreshing and tasty dish, my fav were those shallots.
BAZI-CNY-Longevity-Noodles
Majorly in love with this longevity spicy, sour soup noodles with tender chicken morsels, maitake mushrooms and the cucumber sesame noodles pulled all the flavors together.

Jason, the bartender shaking up a cocktail(no not mine), he was so friendly and told me about the various tasting menus Bazi offered! That beautiful upstairs lounge with the giant dragon is so cozy and intimate. The crispy snapper on top of a bed of cabbage slaw was totally delightful. I know westerners aren’t used to eating a whole fish, but in Asia, it’s always served with the head and tail. Eating fish during New Year brings you luck, so eat UP! Those sweet potato dumplings were the best, they just slide down your throat, so good.

HOH WOK CLUB is a celebration of Asian culture and cuisine. One of the main reasons I created it was to introduce folks to good Asian cuisine run by smaller, independent family owned restaurants and help spread the word.  Find out more about HOH WOK CLUB.

You’re in for a treat!  Last year’s Asian Thanksgiving at Bazi was delightful! Find out how Chef Michael Pirolo and Jen Chaefsky, owners of Macchaliana came up with this brilliant idea of Italian Asian fusion due to their love of Asian cuisine. It’s brilliant they found Chef Brett Collier to execute their concept, I can’t wait for our Chinese New Year dinner, bring your family and friends, the more the merrier, see you there!

Book Giveaway: Nancie Mcdermott, Southern Soups & Stews

October 29, 2015 By Eleanor Hoh 5 Comments

I’m thrilled to be giving away 3 books this year to celebrate The Miami Book Fair! To find out more about the Fair and my personal recommendations for where to eat in downtown Miami, visit my blog here. I’ll be giving away the other two books in the next couple of weeks, so come back and check it out! Here’s the first one just in time for fall, I love soups and stews anytime of the year and I live in Florida.
I’m so honored to give away Nancie McDermott’s new cookbook, she connected with me a few years’ back and is such an inspiration. I’m in awe with all she’s accomplished, just thinking about producing a cookbook sends me into a shock wave. I can hardly believe she has published a total of 9 Asian cookbooks so far! I hope I get to catch a spot of lunch with her. What a neat lady, she’s such a go getter, full of great ideas and advice. I got a chance to meet Nancie, Nathalie Dupree and Cynthia Graubart when I introduced and moderated Southern Specialties at the Miami Book Fair this weekend. What an honor to meet these prestigious authors, so in awe of their accomplishments. I feel such a slacker.
Nancie will be on the panel, Southern Specialties, Sunday, Nov.22, 12-1pm,  building 6100.
Southern-Soups-and-Stews-COV-1024x933About Southern Soups & Stews…
Home cooks throughout the American South treasure time-honored recipes for hearty soups and satisfying stews savored year after year. Often passed down through the generations, the dishes detailed in this book are cherished and shared at family gatherings, holiday feasts, and community suppers throughout the seasons. These recipes serve up soups and stews seasoned with history—from Nathalie Dupree’s Lowcountry Okra and Shrimp Gumbo to Summer Squash Soup with Black Pepper and Thyme, to Collard Greens with Pot Likker and Dumplings—offering us a glimpse of how people farmed, cooked, and continue to celebrate life over time.

NancieMcdermottAbout Nancie…
Nancie McDermott is a food writer and cooking teacher, and the author of 12 cookbooks. Her passion is researching and celebrating traditional food in its cultural context, and her beloved subjects are two seemingly different places with much in common: the cuisines of Asia and of the American South. Nancie gained her Southern kitchen wisdom as a Piedmont North Carolina native, and her Asian culinary research commenced soon after college, when she was sent to northeastern Thailand as a Peace Corps volunteer. For more about Nancie’s interesting life, click here.
